How It Happened
In the opening set, Coppin State began the match with a 14-8 run. UMES then closed the gap with a 6-2 run, highlighted by three kills from Anjola Omolewa. Leading 16-14, the visiting Eagles outpaced the Hawks 9-7 to close out an opening set win.
Although UMES and Coppin State split the first 16 points of set two, the Eagles clinched the second set by building an insurmountable lead with a 15-2 scoring run.
Tied 5-5 in the third frame, The Hawks, led by four kills from Malaysia Shaw, rattled off a 10-4 scoring surge. UMES iced the set by scoring 10 of the final 15 points in the frame, capped off by a kill from Nkemjika Ikemefuna.
The Eagles never trailed in the final set en route to clinching a four-set win. Leading 9-8, the Eagles scored seven of the next nine points to cushion their advantage. Although the Hawks decreased the deficit to four, Coppin State ultimately closed the match by scoring three final points to earn the road victory.
