The Northeast Conference (NEC) tabbed UMES right-handed-pitcher Carter Champey as the conference rookie of the week for the week of April 7, 2025.
In the Hawks' series opener against NEC-leading Central Connecticut State, Champey held the most prolific offense in the conference to zero runs across five relief innings of work.
"Champey is a great example of rolling up the sleeves and getting to work," concluded UMES pitching coach Cole Doherty about Champey's season so far. "He had a reality check early in the season of how difficult it is as a freshman to compete night in and night out at the NCAA Division I level. He took tough coaching and turned in his best performance of the season. I'm proud of his growth, and he is well deserving of this award."
Champey becomes the first UMES Hawk to be named NEC Rookie of the Week in 2025. Champey joins first baseman Diego Aponte and right-handed pitcher Jonah Stepner as Maryland Eastern Shore baseball players that have earned conference player of the week honors. Champey and the Hawks are back in action on Thursday against Wagner in Staten Island.
