HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
After a scoreless first inning from Richard De Jesus on the mound, Christian Azcona hit an RBI double to left field to give the Hawks a 1-0 lead in the second inning.Â
UMES maintained their momentum in the third inning, posting consecutive RBI doubles from Ansel Carson and Jonathan Gonzalez Perez before Gonzalez Perez ultimately advanced home on a Joshua Caldwell stolen base to expand the lead to 4-0.
Even though Mercyhurst responded with a run in the fifth, Darrius Brown lofted an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth, restoring UMES four-run advantage.
Unfortunately for the Hawks, the Lakers outscored Maryland Eastern Shore, 5-0, from the sixth inning until the ninth inning, cementing the comeback win with a three-run ninth frame.
THE NUMBERS
The Hawks finished with five runs on eight hits and two errors while the Lakers tallied six runs on seven hits and no errors.
Four out of UMES' five runs came on RBI doubles
Caldwell and Brown paced the Hawks with two hits each
De Jesus struck out three across five innings of work, yielding just a single earned run
