Hawks finish in fifth at NEC Championships

Hawks finish in fifth place at NEC Championships


ELLICOTT CITY, Maryland | The University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's golf team finished the Northeast Conference Championships in a tie for fifth place in the 12-team field. The fifth place finish marks the best finish for the Hawks since joining the NEC.


The Hawks combined for team scores of 295, 302 and 297 in the three-day event. Their final round total of 297 helped the Hawks jump from ninth place to fifth place in the final team standings.


The team was paced by freshman Marcos Ramirez. Playing in the fifth position in the lineup, the Spaniard briefly led the tournament in the opening round and went on to card a even-par 71. He followed with rounds of 77 and 72 for a tournament total of 220 and finished in a tie for 14th place. Sophomore Jeter Teng finished in a tie for 27th place with consistent scores of 74 and back-to-back rounds of 75. After an opening round of 79, Sophomore Max Osten bounced back with scores of 75 and 72 and a total count of 226 for a share of 33rd place. Andreas Roman opened his tournament with a even-par 71 to tie Ramirez and added rounds of 75 and 81 for a total of 227 and a 36th place finish. Freshman Jaden Hanson finished the tournament in 47th place with rounds of 79, 78 and 78 for a total of 235.


Howard won the team championship with a combined team total of 861 while Long Island's Arjun Singh Bhatia took the individual NEC title with a five-under total of 208 strokes.

UMES will concluded the golf season at next week's PGA WORKS Collegiate Championship at the Park in West Palm Beach, Florida. Competition begins on Monday, May 4. In addition to the UMES men's team qualifying for PGA WORKS, the women's program will also be represented by freshman Bushra Fatima. Fatima, a freshman from Pakistan, earned an invite to the event on Monday morning.
