ORLANDO, FL. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's tennis team finished 0-5 at the MEAC Roundup after falling to Norfolk State 7-0 on February 26, the final day of action.
In the number one singles match Nadia Flores Hernandez fell to the Lady Spartans' Florella Valdivia 6-0, 6-0 while Aissatou Ba fell 6-0, 6-1 to Jennifer Itonyo at the number two match. Fatoumata Ba fell 6-2, 6-0 in the number three singles match to Lerissa Morris.
Haaveshe Sawyer fell 6-1, 6-0 in the four spot to NSU's Lenise Carnage while Donita Peterson defeated Yamada Dorsey 6-0, 6-1 in the number five match. Sashonna Leak put up a tough contest but dropped the sixth match to Fame Goudy 6-2, 6-3 (8-10).
In doubles action Flores-Hernandez and A. Ba fell 8-0 to Valdivia and Morris. F. Ba and Chapman dropped an 8-0 decision to Itonyo and Carnage while Peterson and Goudy took down Sawyer and Dorsey by a score of 8-1.
UMES fell in a 7-0 decision to North Carolina A&T on day three of the MEAC Roundup.
Flores fell 6-2, 6-1 to K. Jackson in the number one singles spot while A. Ba dropped the number two spot 6-4, 6-0 to T. Ruffin. F. Ba fell 6-1, 6-0 to D. Bailey in the third spot while T. Ross defeated Sawyer 6-0, 6-1 in the number four spot.
Obehioye Okojie and Dorsey each fell 8-1 in the final two singles spots.
A. Ba and Flores dropped the number one doubles spot to Jackson and Ruffin 8-5 while Leak and Sawyer fell in a 8-2 decision to Bailey and Ross. Palmer and S. Pihman took down F. Ba and Dorsey in the final doubles spot, 8-0.
The Lady Hawks dropped a close 5-2 contest to host Bethune-Cookman on day two of the roundup.
Flores opened the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-2 loss to Olga Ruislova while A. Ba fell in the number two spot, 6-0, 6-0 to Lucia Polankova. Kiara Powell took down F. Ba in the third spot, 6-0, 6-0.
Valerie Kendrick defeated Sawyer 8-2 in the fourth spot while Leak lost an 8-0 decision to BCC's Shaundra Gaither in the number five spot.
Okojie won the only singles match for UMES on the day when she took down Maria Hartsock 8-0.
In doubles action, A. Ba and Flores dropped the opening match 8-2 to Ruislova and Polanka. The Lady Hawks responded, however, and walked away with victories in the next two doubles matches. Chapman and Sawyer defeated Powell and Kendrick 8-0 while F. Ba and Dorsey shut out Gaiter and Hartsock 8-0.
The maroon and gray dropped two decisions during the opening day of the MEAC Roundup. The Lady Hawks fell 7-0 to Florida A&M and later dropped a 7-0 contest to South Carolina State.
In the number one singles match against the Lady Rattlers, Flores fell to FAMU's Zamambo Mkhize 6-0, 6-2 while A. Ba fell in a tough 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 match to Samaria Bailey. F. Ba fell 6-3, 6-1 in the number three singles match to Shannon Belser.
Sawyer fell 6-1, 6-0 in the four spot to Ashley Green while Daenetta Thompson defeated Dorsey 6-3, 6-1 in the number five match. Okojie dropped the sixth match to Niambi Smith 8-5.
In doubles action Flores and A. Ba fell 8-1 to Mkhize and Bailey. Leak and Sawyer dropped an 8-0 decision to Belser and Green while Thomposon and Smith took down F. Ba and Dorsey by a score of 8-1 in the final match.
In the contest against the Lady Bulldogs, Flores dropped the first match 6-0, 6-0 to SCSU's Mirian Cruz. A. Ba fell 6-0, 6-0 to Marcela Rodezno in the number two spot while F. Ba dropped a 6-0, 6-0 decision to Vesna Popac. Sawyer and Leak each fell 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively, while Alexis Patton defeated Okojie 8-0 in the number six singles match.
The doubles combo of Flores and A. Ba fell 8-0 to Cruz and Rodezno while Okojie and Sawyer also fell by the same score to Popac and Lytkina. The Lady Hawks will face local rival Salisbury in their next contest. UMES takes on the Seagulls on March 1 on 1pm.
