ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FLA. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's tennis team went 0-5 at the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Round-Up on Feb. 22-25 in Altamonte Springs, Florida.
The Lady Hawks fell 7-0 to Florida A&M (FAMU) and South Carolina State (SCSU) on the first day of the Roundup. In the contest against the Lady Rattlers, #1 seed Nadia Flores Hernandez lost 6-3, 6-0 while Aissatou Ba fell 6-0, 6-0 in the number two spot. Fatoumata Ba dropped the number three spot 6-0, 6-1 and Haaveshe Sawyer fell 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth spot. Yamada Dorsey and Bolanle Abioye each dropped their matchups with Dorsey falling 6-1, 6-0 and Abioye losing 6-0, 6-0.
The doubles team of Hernandez and A. Ba fell 8-2 at the number one spot while F. Ba and Sawyer dropped the two spot by the same score. Dorsey and Abioye lost 8-0 in the final doubles contest.
In the decision against the Lady Bulldogs, Hernandez fell 6-0, 6-2 at the number one spot while A. Ba dropped the second seed 6-1, 6-0 to SCSU's Lerissa Morris. F. Ba was competitive at the third seed but fell 6-2, 6-3 while Sawyer had a good outing at #4 but dropped her contest 6-3, 6-3. Abioye lost 6-1, 6-1 at the fifth spot while Tonaio Swangin fell 6-2, 6-0 at the #6 spot.
Hernandez and A. Ba dropped the first doubles spot 8-3 while F. Ba/Sawyer and Abioye/Swangin each fell 8-1 in the final two spots.
UMES had one match on Feb. 23 and lost that contest 7-0 to Bethune-Cookman (BCC). Hernandez lost 6-1, 6-0 at the #1 spot while A. Ba fell by the same score to BCC's Kiara Powell. F. Ba fell in the number three spot 6-0, 6-0 and Sawyer lost 6-1, 6-0 at the four seed. Abioye and Dorsey each fell 6-0, 6-0 at the #5 and #6 spot, respectively.
Hernandez and A. Ba dropped the #1 doubles match 8-2 while F. Ba/Sawyer and Abioye/Dorsey each fell 8-0 in the remaining decisions.
The Lady Hawks dropped a 7-0 contest to North Carolina A&T (NCAT) on Feb. 24. Hernandez fell 6-0, 6-2 in the number one spot with A. Ba losing 6-0, 6-0 to NCAT's Jaymee Jones at #2. F. Ba played tough at the #3 seed but lost 6-3, 6-2 while Sawyer fell by the same score at #4. Abioye dropped her decision 6-0, 6-3 while Dorsey lost a close one at #6, 6-0 and 7-5.
Hernandez/A. Ba and Abioye/Swangin played tough in the doubles but each fell 8-6 at #1 and #3, respectively. The number two team of F. Ba and Sawyer lost their contest 8-0.
The maroon and gray rounded out the weekend with a 7-0 loss to Norfolk State (NSU) on Feb. 25. Hernandez lost 6-0, 6-2 at the #1 seed while A. Ba fell in the number two spot 6-1, 6-0 to NSU's Lerissa Norris. F. Ba lost a competitive decision at #3, 6-2 and 6-3 while Sawyer also lost a close one, 6-3 and 6-3 at the number four seed. Abioye fell 6-1, 6-1 at the #5 spot while Swangin lost 6-2, 6-0 at #6.
Hernandez and A. Ba lost 8-3 at the #1 doubles spot while F. Ba/Sawyer and Abioye/Swangin each fell 8-1 in the final two seeds.
UMES returns to action next week when they host Indiana Purdue-Fort Wayne (IPFW) on March 3.
