PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Tennis Team fell to 0-2 on the young season with a loss to Washington College 8-0 at the windy and cold Hawk Outdoor Tennis Complex. The Shorewomen improved to 2-1 with the win. Washington did not drop a single game in the match.
Down a player, the Lady Hawks defaulted at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles to give the Shorewomen a 2-0 lead. Then at No.1 doubles, Fatoumata Ba and Bolanle Abioye fell to Kristen Hossick and Lydia Bull while Allison Daciek and Kristine Depew topped Brigette Squire and Christine Bermudez at No. 2 doubles. Both doubles matches were a score of 8-0 in favor of the visitors.
Now up 4-0 Washington needed just one more point to secure the victory over the home standing Lady Hawks. That came during the fifth singles, which was played during doubles. Kate Barston topped UMES' Whitney Pullen 6-0, 6-0.
With the win secured the rest of the match was played as pro sets with Daciek toping Ba at No. 1 singles, Abioye falling to Bull at #2 singles and Mary Kelley topping Squire at No.4 singles, all by scores of 8-0. Third singles was not played.
The women are next in action on the 15th at Loyola College (Md.) in Baltimore, Md.
