Box Score
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) fell for the third time this season to a Big East school and for the second time, were held scoreless, as Villanova topped the Hawks 15-0 to open the three game Villanova Baseball Bash in The City of Brotherly Love.
UMES (0-15) didn't feel the love at all as they picked up just four hits in the game and starter Carl Huber was chased after just two thirds on an inning. The Wildcats got to Huber early, posting five hits, eight runs, four earned and three walks on the sophomore hurler. Huber hit the first batter and walked the second when the offense kicked in. They then posted three singles and took advantage of a Hawk error to force UMES to go the pen. Brian White would come in to work the longest outing of his career, going five and third innings and surrendering seven runs in the process.
The Hawks got hits from Remo Orsini, Ryan Coppi, Jorge Pichardo and Josh Dunham, all singles. Coppi's hit extended his hitting streak to 10 games. The game also snapped a 13 game on base streak for Pat Hercinger.
Huber took the loss to fall to 0-4. Villanova's Jordan Ellis got the win to improve to 2-0. He worked five innings and allowed just three hits and one walk.
The Wildcats (5-8) struck for eight runs in the bottom of the first inning and cruised from there behind a season-high 19 hits and the pitching staff's first shutout of the year. Villanova also scored twice in the second inning, four times in the third and once in the fifth to round out the scoring.
Dan Terpak went 3-for-3 with three runs scored and three driven in, while Joe Cotter and Justin Bencsko drove in three runs apiece. The 19 hits for the Wildcats came from 12 different players.
UMES hopes to reverse their fortunes at the event tomorrow when they play Binghamton in a game slated for a noon start.
