MORGANTOWN, W.V. - The Hawks of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) were outgunned in a doubleheader at West Virginia (WVU) as they fell 23-7 and 18-1, allowing the Mountaineers to post 41 runs on 41 hits over the two games. The Hawks by contrast managed just 15 hits and eight runs.
In game one the Hawks would send freshmen Matt Witte to the mound. Witte would wind up taking the loss despite a sold start. He held WVU scoreless in the first and to one run in the second but the Mountaineers posted 21 runs over the next three innings. Witte would officially throw three and a third innings and allow 13 hits and 13 runs.
Russell Deutschmann and Jorge Pichardo each picked up two hits in the game. Deutschmann went 2-4 with two runs while Pichardo was 2-2 with four RBI. Pat Hercinger scored twice and Remo Orsini and Ryan Coppi each had an RBI. The Hawks posted five of their seven runs in game one in the seventh inning. Josh Dunham led the inning off with a single and Phillip Vaughn then hit a double and went to third when Dunham was cut down at the plate. Coppi then singled him home for his RBI. In total, UMES had six hits in the inning to score their five runs.
In game two the Hawks sent Daniel Sterling to the mound and he would get the loss, allowing 10 runs over three innings of work. The Hawks managed just six hits in the game and one run. The lone run came in the fifth inning when Dunham, started the game with a double to center. Tyler Love would pick up the RBI on a ground out that scored Deutschmann who entered for Dunham. Dunham had two of the Hawks' hits on the day.
WVU won the second game 18-1.
On the day Jarryd Summers picked up the game two win and Matt Yurish the win in game one. In the first contest Vince Belnome had five RBI with a 3-5 appearance and four runs. Catcher Tobias Streich also had five RBI in the game with a 4-5 effort and three runs. Tyler Kuhn, Jordan Yost and Dan Dibarolomeo all had three RBI each in the game.
In game two Yost hit a homerun and Austin Markel had a five RBI outing with a 3-3 day at the plate with two runs. Kuhn and Justin Parks had two RBI each in the game. Kuhn was 5-5 at the plate and added three runs. Belnome was also 3-3 at the dish.
UMES will put the day behind them and travel to Norfolk State this weekend for a three-game conference series.
