HAWKS SWEPT IN THREE GAME SERIES AT ETSU

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - The following recaps appear compliments of ETSU Media Relations.

Game One:

The ETSU baseball team defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Friday afternoon at Cardinal Park as they put on a hitting display to get the win, 29-2.

ETSU (16-31, 9-18) out hit the Hawks 31-9 and drew seven walks. Starter Dustin Plumlee threw four scoreless innings while surrendering three hits and striking out four.

The Bucs scored four runs in the bottom of the second as Chas Byrne singled up the middle to score Danny Petro. Later in the inning Jacob Fabry doubled to right center scoring Bubba Herbold and Byrne, and Chris Rankhorn drove in Fabry on a single to third to make the score 4-0.

In the bottom of the third, the Bucs scored eight more runs on a two-run double by Byrne, a RBI single by Fabry, a grounder to short by Anthony Russell, a Petro walk, a two-run single by Ben Allen and a grounder to second by Byrne to give the Bucs a 12-0 lead.

Derek Trent crushed a two-run home run over the fence in left center in the bottom of the fourth to make the score 14-0 Bucs.

The Hawks scratched two runs across in the top of the fifth as Tyler Love drove in a run on an infield single and Phil Vaughn singled in a run to cut the ETSU lead to 14-2.

The Bucs scored six more in the bottom of the fifth on RBI singles by Fabry and Russell, and a grand slam home run to right center by Trent to give the Bucs a 20-2 lead.

In the seventh, the Bucs got a pair of solo home runs as Paul Hoilman homered to right field and Jon Edmonds homered to dead center at close to 430 feet to make the score 22-2.

The Bucs scored seven more runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI hits by Russell, Hoilman, Trent and Edmonds to make the final 29-2.

Trent set two school records as he had eight RBI in the game and his 12 home runs is a ETSU freshman record. Allen, Rankhorn and Fabry each had four hits for the Bucs.

The ETSU bullpen pitched well combining to allow only two runs on six hits while striking out five and walking two. The 27 run win is the biggest margin of victory in ETSU history.

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow as will take on Maryland Eastern Shore at noon at Cardinal Park.

Game Two:

The ETSU baseball team defeated Maryland Eastern Shore on a wet Saturday afternoon at Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn., 23-6.

ETSU (17-31, 9-18) out hit the Hawks 20-8 as the Bucs pounded out ten extra base hits. Starter Brandon Langston threw five scoreless innings for the Bucs as he surrendered only one hit and struck out three.

The Bucs got on the board in the bottom of the first as Chris Rankhorn doubled to right scoring Jacob Fabry from first to give the Bucs a 1-0 lead. In the next at bat, Paul Hoilman also doubled as he drove a ball to right center easily scoring Rankhorn to make the score 2-0.

In the bottom of the fourth, senior Matt McGahey crushed a ball that just caught the right field foul pole for a three-run home run to give the Bucs a 5-0 lead. In the same inning Derek Trent hit his 13th home run of the year as he sent a three-run shot over the fence in left center to make the score 8-0. In the next at bat Danny Petro blasted the third home run of the inning for the Bucs as he sent a ball over the fence in left to give the Bucs a 9-0 lead.

The Bucs added to the lead in the bottom of the fifth on a Hawks error as McGahey would score from second to make the score 10-0.

Ben Allen added to the ETSU lead in the bottom of the sixth as he doubled to the center field fence driving in Petro from first to give the Bucs a 11-0.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bucs scored five more runs on an RBI single by Petro and a grand slam by Allen to make the score 16-0.

The Hawks got on the board in the top of the eighth as Jorge Pichardo doubled to left center driving in two runs to make the score 16-2. Later in the inning Mike Guy singled to right to score another run to cut the ETSU lead to 16-3.

The Bucs scored seven more runs in the bottom of the eighth on RBI hits by Hoilman and Allen, a three-run home run by Troy Mendez and a RBI walk by Petro to make the score 23-3.

UMES scored three more runs in the top of the ninth on RBI doubles by Russel Deutschmann, Remo Orsini and Josh Dunham to make the final 23-6.

With five home runs in the game the Bucs tied the school single season record with 69 home runs on the year. Allen led the team with seven RBI on the day as he was 4-for-6 with a double and a home run. Fabry and Mendez each had three hits for the Bucs.

The Bucs are back in action tomorrow as will take on Maryland Eastern Shore at noon at Cardinal Park in the final game of the series.

Game Three:

The ETSU baseball team swept Maryland Eastern Shore on a sunny afternoon at Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn., 16-2.

ETSU (18-31, 9-18) was out hit by the Hawks but drew an amazing 16 walks in the game. The Bucs pitching combined to limit UMES to two runs on eight hits while striking out nine and walking none.

The Hawks got on the board first in the top of the first as Josh Dunham singled up the middle scoring a run to make the score 1-0.

The Bucs answered in the bottom of the first as Chris Rankhorn came in to score on a Paul Hoilman sacrifice fly to right center to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning, Ben Allen gave ETSU the lead as he singled through the left side driving in Anthony Russell to make the score 2-1. The Bucs scored seven more runs in the inning on a John Edmonds RBI single, a Hawks error and walks to Chas Byrne, Jacob Fabry and Rankhorn to give the Bucs a 9-1 lead.

In the bottom of the second, the Bucs scored another run as Bubba Herbold came in to score on a wild pitch to give the Bucs a 10-1 lead.

Hoilman added to the Buc lead in the bottom of the fourth as he singled up the middle to drive in Fabry and Rankhorn to give ETSU a 12-1 lead. The Bucs scored two more runs on another Hawks error to make the score 14-1.

Edmonds would score in the bottom of the fifth on wild pitch to increase the ETSU lead to 15-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Derek Trent hit his 14th home run of the season as he sent a solo shot over the right field fence to give the Bucs a 16-1 lead.

The Hawks scored again in the top of the seventh as Pat Hercinger single to left driving in a run to make the score 16-2.

Trent was 1-for-1 with four walks and a hit by pitch for the Bucs, while Hoilman drove in three runs for the Bucs. Byrne led the team with two hits in the game and Edmonds also drew four walks.
