PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Tennis Team took on Mount Saint Mary's on April 5, 2008. The Mount got the best of the Lady Hawks by a score of 7-0. UMES was shut out at every position and were unable to score any points in either match.
The Mount did not lose a game in the 7-0 victory. Katilin Hallahan, Chelsea Johnson, Emily Bolchoz, Emma Haley and Emily Grugan all won 6-0, 6-0 in singles play while Bolchoz and Haley teamed for an 8-0 win at No. 1 doubles and Samantha Dupaya and Taylor Hamlet won by the same score at No. 2 doubles.
The Hawks rebounded three days later on April 8, 2008 when they took on the University of District of Columbia (UDC). While they didn't post a victory, they played a much closer match, falling 7-2.
LaToya Coltrane played an exciting match at #3 singles taking the win 6-3, 6-1. Her counterpart at #4 singles, Christine Bermudez also picked up a win with an 8-5 pro set win over Ericka Cook. Those two combined to play doubles at the #2 spot but couldn't pull out the win, falling 8-6.
UMES, playing a very busy schedule, was in action two days later on April 10. This time they traveled south to take on Virginia State University. They dropped a 7-0 decision, playing shortened pro sets. Fatoumata Ba, Bolanle Abioye and Coltrane all dropped their matches by scores of 8-1 at the first through third singles spots respectively.
It was three days later when the Lady Hawks regrouped to get a little revenge on the Firebirds of UDC. Now on their home court UMES got their first win of the year, a 6-3 victory. Coltrane won again, 8-0 over Chantel Henry. Bermudez, Brigette Squire and Whitney Pullen all picked up singles win in the fourth through sixth spots. Coltrane and Bermudez picked up a doubles win at #2 doubles while Squire and Pullen also win at #3 doubles. Ba and Abioye both fell at one and two singles by scores of 8-2.
The Hawks also took on Howard on April 14. In a shortened match, due to weather and scheduling conflicts, the Bison took a 4-0 win. Ba fell at #1 singles 6-1, 6-0 while Abioye and Coltrane fell 6-0, 6-0. The other three singles matches were unfinished and the doubles were all taken by Howard 8-0.
In another MEAC match Coppin State took a 6-1 win. Pullen picked up the lone Hawks point at #6 singles while Squire played a close match at #5 singles 6-3, 6-3. In doubles action the Hawks won the #3 spot but surrendered the point after losing #1 doubles 9-8.
In their last chance for a win UMES fell to Trinity College (D.C.) 5-4 on April 18. Ba picked up a singles win 6-0, 6-0 topping Zulema Ramirez. Coltrane got a win at #2 singles 6-1, 6-0 over Vicky Gregg.
Trinity would get the wins in the remaining singles matches. Squire played a close match at #4 singles, falling 6-4, 6-2. UMES picked up wins at #1 and #2 doubles with Ba and Coltrane topping Ramirez and Gregg 8-2 in the first position while Squire and Bermudez won 9-7 in the second slot.
With the match all tied at four, Trinity would get the final point at #3 doubles 8-0, taking a 5-4 win. The Lady Hawks finished the year at 1-13. They will prepare for next season, returning all six players.
