PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - After over a month on the road, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) women's basketball team came home in style, posting their first home win of the season against Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) 75-58.
The Lady Hawks shot 87.5-percent from the free throw line in the first half of a matchup which, on average, saw a foul committed ever 53 seconds.
April McBride (New Rochelle, N.Y.) netted her second double-double of the season, breaking her season record for points and finishing with game-highs of 22 points and 12 rebounds. The 6-0 junior spent 38 minutes on the court for the Lady Hawks and shot 14-of-18 from the free throw line.
Tiffany Reid (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Josephine McLane (Centerville, Va.) both finished with 19 points each. McLane hit 6-for-10 from 3-point range and Reid added four rebounds, two assists and two steals to the win.
The Lady Rams came back from a five point deficit to tie the game for the second time at 15 all with 8:32 left in the first half. After nearly a minute and half of neither team scoring, McBride started a UMES 6-0 run with a jumper in the paint.
The Lady Hawks held WSSU scoreless for almost four minutes of play, when Rene Rector made two free throws with 4:41 on the clock to break the Lady Rams offensive silence. UMES would hold onto their lead for the rest of the game, outrebounding WSSU 37-28.
Rector and Keoshia Worthy led the Lady Rams with 18 points each. But the warrior award of the afternoon goes to Vontisha Woods who played in all 40 minutes for WSSU.
UMES will continue play at home on January 12 against South Carolina State. This will be the first game of another double-header for Hawk basketball with the Lady Hawks tipping off at 5:30 p.m. Watch the action live online at umeshawks.com or listen to the play-by-play courtesy Timeless Classics 540 AM.
