PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) opened their third season under head coach Will Gardner today and had a fairly good day at the plate, but struggled on the mound, as they dropped both ends of a double header to Rider University 17-2 and 11-7 and fall to 0-2 on the season while the Broncs open their year 2-0.
Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) and Jorge Pichardo (La Vega, Dominican Republic) each had three RBI on the day while Pichardo, Russel Deutschmann (Baden, Ontario, Canada) and Josh Dunham (Des Moines, Iowa), all seniors, had two hits apiece in the twin bill.
The best inning for the Hawks came in game two when UMES exploded for four runs in the sixth inning. Down 11-3, Tyler Love (Palmyra, Pa.) got things started with a single through the right side. Dunham followed with another single to the same spot and advanced Love all the way to third with some heads up base running. Vaughn then doubled them both home on a shot to left. Remo Orsini (Elkton, Md.) drew a walk and Vaughn would go to third on a wild pitch. Pichardo picked up the RBI on a ground out that pushed Orsini to third. Troy King (Baltimore, Md.), who had entered in right field an inning earlier, would keep it going with a single to right to collect his first collegiate hit and RBI as Orsini crossed the plate.
The game would be called on account of darkness after Deutschmann would ground out and Elliott Alston (Littleton, Colo.) would fly out to right to end the sixth. Ryan Miller would pick up the win for the Broncs and Cameron Zimerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) would get the loss for UMES in his first collegiate start.
In the first game Rider would jump all over freshmen Karim Gonzalez (Mexico City, Mexico), picking up two runs in the first and 10 in the second before chasing him for the third inning. Jimmer Kennedy picked up the win for Rider going six innings, allowing four hits, two runs, one earned, a walk and getting four strike outs. Gonzalez took the loss as the Hawks used four pitchers in the game. The most effective being Brian White (Virginia Beach, Va.) for the final inning who allowed just one hit and had one strike out. Freshmen John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.) was impressive in relief, he went four innings and allowed three runs but showed some potential, commanding the zone in his first three innings of work, allowing no runs until the sixth frame.
In that game UMES managed just four hits, the pair from Deutschmann and one each from Vaughn and Pat Hercinger (Papillion, Neb.).
Rider was hot at the plate. They tallied 26 hits between the two games. Lead-off hitter James Hayes was one of the hottest, going 5-8 with three runs and five RBI. Sean Olson also tallied five RBI on a 3-10 day with a run. Matt McCollum posted a 2-6 day with three runs and five RBI. Their biggest inning came in game one when they posted 10 runs in the second. They also had three innings with three runs and a pair with two runs.
The same two teams play game three of the opening weekend series tomorrow, Sunday Feb. 22 starting at noon at Hawks Stadium.
