COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's A.J Casario was 3-for-3 with a three-run home run and four RBIs as the Terrapins cruised to an 11-4 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore at Shipley Field Wednesday.
The win for Maryland (6-7) is its sixth at home this season; The loss for UMES (2-12) is its seventh consecutive.
The Hawks had a solid day at plate matching Maryland's 10 hits with 10 of their own. UMES was led by Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.), who was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three stolen bases. Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) also had a multiple-hit day, going 2-for-4 with a run, while Russel Deutschmann (Baden, Ontario) had a hit, walked and scored twice.
The Hawks threatened in the first inning as two of the first three batters reached. Josh Dunham (Des Moines, Iowa) beat out a roller to second for an infield hit and Pat Hercinger (Papillion, Neb.) coaxed a walk off of Maryland starter Sander Beck. Elliott Alston (Littleton Colo.), though, lined into a double play at second to end the inning.
The Terps got on the board with three in their half of the first. Casario drew a leadoff walk and stole second, coming around on a Will Greenberg RBI double to right-center field. UMES right-hander Carl Huber (Mount Airy, Md.) had three willd pitches to follow resulting in two more Maryland runs from David Poutier and Greenberg.
UMES cut the deficit to one with two runs in the second, knocking Beck out of the after just 1.2 innings.
Deustchmann singled up the middle followed by walks from Michael Guy (Lake Ariel, Pa.) and Remo Orsini (Elkton, Md.) to load the bases with two outs. Vaughn then rocketed a ball to center, scoring two.
Maryland added four more run in the second, three of which came off of Casario's home run to right served up by reliever Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.), to take at 7-2 lead.
Poutier drove in one of the Terps' two runs in the third on a single right as Maryland extended the lead to 9-2.
Down 10-2 in the top of the sixth, pinch-hitter Jorge Pichardo (La Vega, Dominican Republic) knocked in both Deutchmann and Armstrong with a sharp single to right center to make it 10-4.
Deutchmann, the last of four Hawks' pitchers on the day, threw the final three innings, allowing just one run on three hits.
Huber (0-2) went one inning, surrendering five runs, four walks and struck out one to take the loss. Brett Harman (1-2) earned the win in 2.1 innings. He allowed one hit and struck out five of the eight batters he faced.
UMES gets back at it Thursday, hosting La Salle at 3 p.m.
