GAINSVILLE, Fla. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's 4x800-meter relay track team broke a nearly 25-year-old school record in the event at the Florida Relays at James G. Pressly Stadium at Percy Beard Track Saturday.
Seniors Celia Whyte (Manchester, Jamaica), Merrecia James (Portland, Jamaica) and freshmen Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.) and Cynthia Anais (Paris, France) were all part of the squad that finished second in the relay in a time of 8:44.38, smashing the previous record of 9:00.01 set on April 26, 1984, in Philadelphia, Pa.
The same group of four was 21st in the 4x400-meter relay in 3:46.54.
In the field events, Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) and Saisha Woodward (Atlanta, Ga.) had an impressive day as well. Henry finished third in the shot put with a mark of 14.10 meters (46 feet, 3.25 inches). Woodward was sixth in the event with a toss of 13.54 meters (44 feet, 5.25 inches).
The UMES track and field teams are back in action at the Hampton Invitational in Hampton, Va., next Friday and Saturday (April 10-11).
