FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Junior Allodin Fothergill (New Hempstead, N.Y.) ran 45.81 in the men's 400-meter finals in the 2009 Outdoor Track and Field Championships at McDonnell Field on the campus of the University of Arkansas Saturday.
With his sixth-place finish, Fothergill becomes just the second track and field All-American for the Hawks under head coach Ernest Barrett, joining shot putter Kimani Kirton, who earned the distinction in the 2007 outdoor season. Fothergill is also the second All-American in track and field since 1982. Ian Daley, a sprinter for UMES, earned the honor that season.
Fothergill's finish earned three points in the team standings. He was fourth overall heading in to the championship race after breaking the school record in the 400. The mark stood for 44 years and was held by Edwin Skinner.
Fothergill topped Thomas Murdaugh (45.90) of Ohio State, Bryan Miller (45.91) of Texas A&M and Robert Simmons of Louisiana State (did not finish) in the final.
"Allodin did a fantastic job," said Barrett. "I'm really proud of him. To become the second All-American that I've had in my 10 years at UMES just says a lot about the athlete he is."
Fothergill was fifth after the prelims with a time of 46.01.
The same three student-athletes who claimed the first three places in the semifinal round did so in the final.
Florida State's Jonathan Borlee won the event with a time of 44.78 to go along with 10 points for the Seminoles. Michael Bingham (45.09) of Wake Forest took second for eight points and Calvin Smith (45.29) of Florida was third with six points.
Dwight Mullings of Mississippi State was just ahead of Fothergill in fifth. He ran 45.48 and scored four points.
