WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Tadd Bower went 4-for-5 with a home run and a triple and Logan Billbrough allowed one hit over six innings as the William and Mary baseball team shutout the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 24-0, at Plumeri Park in the season opener for both teams Friday.
Bower scored three runs and drove in five more and Billbrough faced just four batters over the minimum to earn the victory.
Junior right fielder Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) laced a double to center in the fourth inning and freshman designated hitter Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) tripled to right field in the for the Hawks only two hits.
William and Mary scored runs in every inning except the sixth with the help of 20 hits and four UMES errors.
The Hawks surrendered at least 20 runs for the first time since East Tennessee State topped UMES, 29-2 and 23-6, on May 9-10, 2008.
Junior right-hander Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) was tagged with the loss, throwing two innings and giving up seven hits and seven runs and walking one. The Hawks used five more pitchers on the day with senior righty Cameron Zimmerman (Harrisburg, Pa.) showing the most effectiveness.
Zimmerman came on in the fourth inning in relief of senior Carl Huber (Mount Airy, Md.) and allowed just one run and three hits in three innings of work. He struck out four and walked one.
The Tribe posted five runs in the bottom of the first inning but not before freshman left fielder Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) gunned down Ryan Brown with a one-hop throw to the plate on a Bower single for the first out.
Up 1-0 in the first, Chris Forsten singled up the middle, driving in Jackson Shaver and Derek Lowe. Jonathan Slattery also came across on an error by senior Phil Vaughn (Clinton, Md.) on the play.
The Tribe led, 9-0, when William and Mary combined for 10 runs in the fourth and fifth frames off Huber and Zimmerman. Brown and Stephen Arcure hit consecutive two-out, run-scoring doubles and Bower had a RBI triple, keying the offense in the fourth.
W&M rounded out the scoring with five runs in the seventh and eighth
Haines finished 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and junior Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) stole a base.
Nine Tribe players had hits and 10 scored.
The teams play again Saturday at 2 p.m.
