HAMPTON, Va. - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Men's and Women's Tennis Teams headed south to Hampton Roads this past weekend to take on Hampton University, Morgan State University and Norfolk State University. The conference matches with the Pirates and Bears both ended up 7-0 in the oppositions' favor for the men and women while the Spartans topped the Lady Hawks 7-0 and the Fighting Hawks 6-1 in non-conference play.
UMES' no. 2 player Emmash Sudusinghe played well against Hampton before falling 6-2, 6-2 while on the women's side no. 1 player Solana McMillan was a tough out for Na Hyun Baek, falling 6-2, 6-1. No other Hawk managed more than one point against the Pirates as the men and women both fell 7-0.
In a make-up match from earlier in the season, Morgan State traveled to Hampton to face the Hawks. Fresh-off their early match with the Pirates, the UMES men and women fell to the Bears 7-0. MarQuet Robinson and Osvaldo Rivera both fell 6-2, 6-0 in their matches at no. 2 and no. 3 singles respectively. Sudusinghe, suffering from an injury sustained against Hampton, couldn't go in singles as Morgan State took the sixth singles by default. In doubles action Dorian Thomas and Sudusinghe, who struggled through the pairing, fell 8-2 at the top doubles spot while Rashad James and Rivera fell by the same score at no. 3 doubles.
On the women's side McMillan was again strong, falling 6-2, 6-2 to Viktoriy Lukyaneko. LaToya Coltrane also played well, falling 6-0, 6-2 to Nekesa Thomas. The other women's matches ended in shut outs.
In a non-conference tilt the Hawks took on the southern division's Norfolk State. Thomas played well at no. 3 singles before falling 6-0, 6-3 to Jonathan Sessom. In one of the most exciting matches of the tournament, Rivera took on Dexter McDowell. They went to tiebreak in game one, 7-5 before Rivera fell 6-4 in the second set. Jon Toms won by default at no. 6 singles picking up the only point for the Hawks. Toms and Robinson also won their no. 3 doubles set by default. UMES was unable to pick up the pairs point as they fell at the other two doubles sets. Rivera and James played well however, falling 8-2 at no. 2 doubles.
In women's action McMillan was strong at the top singles spot, falling 6-1, 7-5 to Jenny Astbury. Coltrane picked up a point at no. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-1 but no other Lady Hawk was able to score on the Spartans.
UMES opens their home portion of the schedule on Friday, March 26 when they take on Howard in MEAC action. Both the men and women's match starts at 1:00 p.m.
