HAWKS FALL AT BUCKNELL, 11-4

April 21, 2010

Box Score

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Bucknell scored four runs each in the second and sixth innings to defeat the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 11-4, at Depew Field Wednesday.

The Bison (18-25) had three players with two hits, led by Ben Allen who went 2-for-2 with three runs cored. UMES (2-33) got hits from eight players including a blast off the bat of junior Bryan Chaikowsky (Bethlehem, Pa.) over the batter's eye in center field.

Bucknell got on the board first in the second inning, taking a 4-0 lead. B.J. LaRosa highlighted the frame with a two-out bases-loaded double down the right-field line, scoring Drew Constable, Dave Duffett and Scott Glass.

Andy Brouse led off the Bison third with a solo shot to left, but the Hawks responded with three runs in their half of the inning. Freshman Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) powered his third home run of the season out to left to make it 5-1.

With two outs in the inning freshman Donnie Haines (Carneys Point, N.J.) doubled to center, plating Chaikowsky from second. Junior Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) followed with a single to cut the deficit to 5-3.

Bucknell added to the lead with one in the fourth. Allen walked to start the inning and moved up on a wild pitch before coming home on a Ben Yoder base hit to right with two outs. Vaughn ended the frame, climbing the fence in center to rob Brouse of his second homer of the day.

Down, 7-3, in the sixth, UMES hit its second longball of the day on Chaikowsky's bomb. The Bison broke the game open with another four runs in the bottom of the inning.

UMES used two pitchers in the sixth before recording an out. Sophomore John DesChamps (Virginia Beach, Va.) started the inning before giving way to senior Carl Huber (Mount Airy, Md.) with the bases loaded. Huber promptly uncorked a wild pitch to score Allen for an 8-4 game and, with the bases juiced again, Doug Shribman singled to bring in two more. Bob Donato closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

Right-hander Matt Witte (Westminster, Md.) took the loss for UMES. He fell to 1-5, pitching the first three innings. He gave up five earned runs on six hits and three walks. DesChamps pitched two innings and surrendered two runs while Zimmerman gave up three runs.

Marcus Garone (2-0) earned the win, going three innings as the predetermined starter. He allowed one hit and two walks while striking out four.

The game was called in the seventh inning due to lightning and impending weather.

UMES next travels to Florida A&M May 24-25 for a key MEAC series at Moore-Kittles Field in Tallahassee. The teams will play a doubleheader beginning at noon on Saturday and conclude the set with another noon start on Sunday.
