PRINCESS ANNE, Md. -- The Hawks winter and spring sports are now in full swing as eight UMES teams competed during the week. Indoor Track competed in the MEAC Championships, baseball and men's golf kicked off their season pus the bowling team competed against many MEAC opponents in Baltimore.
MEN'S BASKETBALL
The rough season for the Hawks continued this week as UMES fell in two contests on the road. UMES fell to Bethune-Cookman 86-50 last Monday and in a close game to Coppin State 69-67 on Saturday. UMES stands at 6-20 on the season, 3-10 in the MEAC.
Hillary Haley (Oxon Hill, Md.) earned his fourth double-double of the season with 24 points and 13 rebounds against Coppin State. Freddy Obame Obame (Libreville, Gabon) also got a double-double against Coppin State, getting 10 points and 13 boards.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
The Lady Hawks had a tough game with Coppin State on Saturday, and despite Adobi Agbasi (Columbus, Ga.) getting her first-ever double-double, UMES ultimately lost to the Eagles 62-50 in Baltimore. The team falls to 8-17 overall and 5-7 in the conference.
Agbasi finished the day with 13 points, 11 rebounds and seven blocks. Amber Cook (Greensboro, N.C.) earned seven points and seven rebounds, while Casey Morton (Mardela Springs, Md.) earned six in those two categories.
INDOOR TRACK (MEN'S AND WOMEN'S)
After a grueling MEAC Championship down in Landover, Maryland, the UMES men's and women's indoor track teams finished third overall to end the season competition. On the women's side, UMES finished with 100 points, finishing behind first place Hampton's 188.50. The men's team got 74 points, whereas first place Norfolk State ended with 200.
Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) earned a number of first-place finishes, including the 800 meter run with a time of 2:10.47, the 1 mile run with a finish at 5:01.26, and the 3000 meter run at 10:50.51. Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) got first in the women's shot put with a distance of 15.54 meters, while Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) won the men's shot put with a throw of 17.21 meters.
The UMES women's team of Eunice Jones (Lanham, Md.), Kenesha Abrams (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Emilie Ducados (Paris, France) and Cynthia Anais finished first in the women's distance medley with a finals time of 12:06.44.
BOWLING
The Hawks earned yet another top four finish over the weekend, getting second place in the Morgan State Invitational with a 10-2 record, falling just shy of first place Nebraska's 11-1 result. UMES finished above the five other MEAC opponents in attendance, including Delaware State and Morgan State.

BASEBALL
Hawks baseball got their season under way with a weekend road series against Appalachian State. UMES fell in each game with the Mountaineers winning 4-0, 10-2 and 9-0. The Hawks begin the season at 0-3.
Sophomore centerfielder Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) starts the year with a three-game hitting streak, going 5-for-12 (.417) during the series. Third baseman Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) got the first RBI of the season, driving in Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) on a left field single in the fifth inning of game two.
SOFTBALL
The UMES softball team fought well in their first weekend series, however fell in their three games against Alabama State all by only one or two runs. The Saturday doubleheader saw the Hornets win 6-5 and 10-8, followed by a Sunday 10-9 defeat for the Hawks. UMES now stands at 1-6 on the season.
Freshman catcher Charlise Castro (Saugerties, N.Y.) got a three-run home run in game three, her second of the season, going 8-for-11 (.727) in the series including two doubles and eight RBI. Senior centerfielder Kyrus Whitehurst (Virginia Beach, Va.) hit safely in all three games, including going 3-for-3 in game two with an RBI-double and RBI single.
GOLF
UMES is currently competing in Frito Lay AT&T Intercollegiate in Philadelphia, Mississippi, hosted by Jackson State University. This tournament kicks off the spring season for the men's golf team. The Hawks completed day one on Sunday and will finish on Monday.
After round one, the Hawks stand 17th with a team score of 393, +105 over par. Michael Veverica (Brunswick, Md.) leads the team with a score of 87, good for 71st overall, followed closely by Christopher Toney (La Plata, Md.), who is tied for 73rd overall with a first day score of 89.
UPCOMING WEEK (FEB. 21-27)
Homecoming is just around the corner, along with homecoming basketball games. On Saturday, February 26th the Hawks men's and women's basketball teams will play against Howard at the Hytche Athletic Center. The women are set to play at 2:00 p.m., followed by the men's tip off at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are just ten dollars for the whole day, but they are going fast. Both games will be broadcast on the Hawks Radio Network.
The Hawks baseball team will start a nine-game homestand on Tuesday, February 22nd with a 2:30 p.m. game against George Washington. This weekend, UMES will play a three-game set against Fairleigh Dickinson at Hawk Field, starting with a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader on Sunday, February 27th and ending with a noon game on Monday, February 28th. Each game can be heard on the Hawks Radio Network with baseball broadcaster Dave Vatz.
The golf team will finish the Frito Lay/AT&T Intercollegiate in Mississippi on Monday. Then next weekend, the Hawks will head to Daytona Beach, Florida to compete in the Bethune-Cookman Spring Invitational for their second event of the spring season. The two-day event will take place on Saturday, February 26th and Sunday, February 27th.
