RICHMOND, Va. - Left-hander Chris Bates pitched six scoreless innings allowing two hits and a walk, and Robby Massar and Chris Cowell each drove in two runs as Richmond defeated the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team, 5-2, in Game 2 of the series at Pitt Field Saturday.
Bates (1-0), a 15th-round draft pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2010, was dominant in his first start of the season. He recorded seven strikeouts, throwing just 89 pitches in the win.
Richmond (8-10-2) did all its damage in the third, fourth and fifth innings off UMES righty Jacob Foreman (Little Orleans, Md.), including scoring the decisive runs on a Massar RBI double and Cowell RBI single in the bottom of the fourth for a 3-0 lead.'
With Bates' outing complete in the seventh, UMES (1-16) got on the scoreboard. Nick Wiggins (Littleton, Colo.) led off the inning a line-drive double to left and moved to third on an Andrew Blum wild pitch. Franklin Armstrong (Trenton, N.J.) then flied out to center field, chasing home Wiggins, making it 5-1.
The Hawks added another and threatened for more in the eighth. Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) reached with a one-out error by Mike Small at shortstop and stole second. James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) followed with a walk and Johnson advanced to third as the fourth ball got away from Blum and Cowell behind the plate for a wild pitch.
Bret Williams misplayed Bryan Chaikowsky's (Bethlehem, Pa.) groundball to first scoring Johnson. Chaikowsky moved to second and Newsome was thrown out in a close play at the plate for the second out of the inning. Luis Mena (Cape Coral, Fla.) bounced to third as Blum worked out of trouble.
Bernard Parker (Waldorf, Md.) held the Spiders in the bottom of the frame and Alex Maffett came on in the ninth to record his first save.
Wiggins and Shaquille Bagwell (Atlantic, Va.) tallied the Hawks only three base hits on the day. Wiggins went 2-for-4 with the double, a single and run scored. Bagwell had an infield hit to short in the top of the third.
The Spiders opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Small notched a two-out single of the middle and stole second before Matt Zink drove him in for the lead with a base hit. Up 3-0, Richmond added a pair in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Massar and a Cowell run-scoring hit.
Foreman (0-4) went 5.2 innings, giving up nine hits and five runs for the loss. Parker and Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) finished with 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
