March 25, 2011

NORFOLK, Va. -- University of Maryland Eastern Shore freshman Arshell Jackson (Easton, Md.) was named Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for the period ending March 20th, the conference announced on Friday.

Jackson was placed in the third singles position for the first time this season and prevailed, shutting out Coppin State's Hafsatu 6-0, 6-0. She was also placed on the first doubles team, partnering up with Brittany Coppock (Glen Burnie, Md.) to defeat Lauretta Mukam and Courtney Clark 8-4.

With the assistance of Jackson's victories, the Hawks earned their first conference win in almost two years, shutting out the Eagles 7-0 in the match.

"I am very proud of Malcolm Johnson (men's MEAC Rookie of the Week) and Arshell for these individual achievements and our teams as a whole. They are surely a sign of things to come, as Hawks tennis is turning the corner," says head coach Harold Fowler.

Jackson and the Hawks will next face Mt. St. Mary's on Sunday, March 27th in Emmitsburg.
