GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Competing in the two-day Florida Relays, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore earned eight top-10 finishes in a tough field on Friday and Saturday.
Friday saw the individual running competitions commence in Gainesville. Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) earned a strong 5th place finish in the 800-meter run with a time 2:09.24, less than two seconds behind the winner. Teammate Emilie Ducados (Paris, France) finished just behind her in 6th with a time of 2:09.28.
Later in the day, Mustapha Habbani (Saint-Gervais-la-ForÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â 'ªt France) set a new school record for the 3000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:12.30, good for 6th place and passing the old record by over seven seconds.
The Hawks earned two top-25 finishes in the 110-meter hurdles. Ackeem Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) earned 8th place with a time of 14.09, while Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) got 22nd place at 14.68 seconds.
Andre Walsh (St. Catherine, Jamaica) got a 9th place finish in the 400-meter hurdles at 51.84 seconds. The Hawks also got two individual top-20 finishes in running events: Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.) placed 14th in the 400-meter dash in 47.43 seconds, and Donohue Williams (Kingston, Jamaica) finished 17th in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53.19.
On the second day of competition, Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) broke her own school record in the women's shot put with a distance of 16.15 meters, over a meter better than her previous best and good for 3rd place.
Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) also picked up a 3rd place finish in the shot put, throwing for a distance of 16.78 meters. He also earned a 19th place finish in the discus throw at 46.20 meters.
Saturday also saw the team relay competition. The Hawks placed 6th in each the men's 4x200-meter relay competition at 1:24.16 and the men's 1600-meter relay with a time of 3:23.80. The women's 1600-meter relay squad got a 13th place finish with a final time of 4:01.81.
The team is next set to compete in the Coppin State Donald Webster Memorial in Baltimore next weekend.
