PHILADELPHIA -- The UMES men's relay teams were in the spotlight on day two of the Penn Relays, qualifying to compete in their respective IC4A Finals on Saturday as competition continues.
The men's 4x200 meter relay team got into the IC4A round with a heat finish of 1:24.12 seconds to take 10th place. The relay, run by Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.), Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.), Nyls Nubret (St. Francois, Guadeloupe) and Marcus Wallace (Abington, Pa.) was the fastest finish this season by Hawks.
The Hawks will also compete in the IC4A Final on the men's 4x100-meter relay after the team of Ackeem Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica), Keane-Dawes, Miles and Wallace finished 15th with a time of 41.03 seconds.
The women's side also competed in the relay competition. In the women's 4x200-meter relay, the Hawks team of Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.), Melina Gallas (Paris, France), Jennell Wade (White Plains, Md.) and Emilie Ducados (Paris, France) finished in 30th with a time of 1:40.64. The UMES also ran in the women's sprint medley relay, getting 22nd place with a team time of 4:04.44.
Day two also saw the men's field competition commence in Philadelphia. Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) got the fifth longest distance in the college level shot put with a toss of 16.49 meters.
Dwayne Powell (Mitchellville, Md.) competed in the eastern round of the long jump, getting a distance on 6.61 meters to receive 21st place.
UMES will compete in their next events on Saturday, the third and final day of the Penn Relays.
