HAWKS FALL TO GARDNER-WEBB 7-0

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - Despite eight hits by UMES in the game, the Hawks were shut out by Gardner-Webb 7-0 to finish the three-game series on Saturday. The Hawks fall to 0-3 while the Bulldogs go to 3-0.

Gardner-Webb got on the board in the bottom of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, John Harris hit a three-run triple into the left-center gap. He scored the next at bat as Brad Collins reached on error, giving the Bulldogs a 4-0 lead.

The Bulldogs struck again in the second as Danny Yelverton scored on a pop up error with Adam McFarland batting, pushing the Bulldogs advantage to five runs.

Tyler Witte (Westminster, Md.) (0-1) started on the mound, throwing a scoreless third, fourth and fifth inning before allowing an unearned run in the sixth after a ground out from Benji Jackson scored Ryan Allen for a 6-0 Gardner Webb lead. Witte finished with 5.2 innings thrown with six runs allowed, only three of them earned, with a strikeout.

The home team scored again in the seventh with a Collins RBI triple to score Harris to put Gardner-Webb up 7-0.

UMES had runners in scoring position in five of its nine innings, but were defeated by the Bulldogs in the end.

Tre-Von Johnson (East New Market, Md.) and James Newsome (Mechanicsville, Md.) each start the season with three-game hit streaks. Johnson went 2-for-4 with a stolen base, while Newsome went 1-for-4. Brandon Schott (Warren, Pa.) went 3-for-4, earning his first hits as a Hawk.

The win went Bulldogs starter to Beau Hilton (1-0), who pitched four innings with four strikeouts. Harris finished with three hits in four at bats, getting three RBI and two runs.

UMES returns to the state of Maryland and will take on Navy in Annapolis on Wednesday for a 2:00 p.m. matinee.
