UMES ENDS NONCONFERENCE SLATE AGAINST HIGHLANDERS

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - Tomorrow (02/24), the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Basketball Team ends its nonconference slate in Newark, N.J. to face the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) Highlanders inside the Estelle and Zoom Fleisher Athletic Center. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

LAST TIMEOUT

Last Saturday (02/21), the club was unable to hang on as they fell to the South Carolina State Lady Bulldogs, 69-58, inside the S-H-M Memorial Center.

SC State took a seven-point advantage after back-to-back freebies, 32-25. UMES closed the gap and reclaimed the lead after a 13-2 run, 38-34, with less than 15 minutes left. Two consecutive buckets from the Lady Bulldogs tied the contest, 38-38, but Maryland Eastern Shore answered. Within the next two minutes, the Lady Hawks went on a 7-0 spurt to regain the momentum, 45-38. SC State responded with a 9-0 run to retake the lead, 46-45, with less than nine minutes remaining. In the closing moments, the Lady Bulldogs made clutch baskets and free throws down the stretch. SC State closed the contest on a 15-8 run to win, 69-58.

TOP PERFORMERS

Senior guard Shawnee Sweeney (Chester, Va.) had a team-high 17 points after going 5-of-7 from downtown. Other notable Hawk performances included junior Alexis Udoji (Randolph, Mass.) registering 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor. Senior guard Jessica Long added 11 points after shooting 50-percent (4-of-8) on the day.

MATCHUP PREVIEW

Tuesday's contest will be the second meeting between the two institutions. A year ago, UMES won the inaugural meeting, 68-61, inside the William P. Hytche Athletic Center. In that game, UMES bench outscored NJIT, 52-6, led by Mariah McCoy (Rock Hill, S.C.) posting a career-high 27 points. McCoy shot nearly 59-percent from the field (10-for-17) while grabbing a game-high eight boards. For the Highlanders, Martina Matejcikova also set a new career-high, 27 points, including 10-for-16 from the field, while Uju Nwankwo added 14 points and eight boards in the loss.

NJIT comes in 10-16 overall, but lost a close one at Texas-Pan American, 54-53. On the season, the Highlanders are 1-1 versus Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) foes. Also, the squad has accumulated a 7-6 home record and won their previous two contests inside the Fleisher Athletic Center. Leah Horton leads the team in scoring (10.1) and rebounding (6.7).

For the Lady Hawks, they enter 10-14 on the season. Currently, UMES is 3-7 against non-MEAC opponents; however, won their last nonconference game versus Monmouth, 86-73. In those contests, Udoji registers 12.0 points-per-game (PPG) and 9.0 rebounds-per-game (RPG). Long chips in 10.3 PPG while Sweeney adds just under 10 PPG (9.5).

UPCOMING SCHEDULE

This Saturday (02/28), the Lady Hawks resume conference play as they have north on rt. 13 to meet Delaware State. Game-time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
