SALISBURY, Md. - On the first day of the 2015 season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Tennis Team dropped their matches against in-state rivals, Salisbury and Towson. With the setbacks, the Lady Hawks fell to 0-2 on the young season.
In the morning match against the regionally ranked #10 Seagulls, UMES battled as they picked up games, but Salisbury won the match, 9-0. Melequa King and Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) won two games versus the Seagulls' No. 1 doubles team of Natalie Savage and Katie Youlios, but came up short, 8-2. Seniors Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) and Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria) also won two games, but lost to Salisbury's Charlotte Walker and Claudia Lohn, 8-2. In singles play, King served in the No. 2 spot and won three total games, but Youlios took the match, 6-1, 6-2. Brown and DaTonya Price also won a game, respectively, before falling to their counterparts.
In their second match of the day, the Lady Hawks won some games, but the Tigers claimed the match, 9-0. Maryland Eastern Shore's doubles team of Price and Reine Fowajuh (Wilmington, Del.) picked up a game, but lost to the Tigers' Ayana Dow and Cailey Easdale, 6-1. In singles competition, three Lady Hawks won a game. Jerabkova and King each won two games while Fowajuh took one herself.
On Feb. 20, the Lady Hawks return to the court as they will head to Greensboro, N.C. to face conference foe, North Carolina A&T. Match is set for 1 p.m.
