PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- In more than a month away from competition, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Tennis Team dropped a tough match to the Penn State-Abington Nittany Lions, 5-4, in their home opener. With the loss, the Lady Hawks dropped to 0-3 overall whereas the Nittany Lions improved to 6-1 on the season.
Newcomers Melequa King (Forestville, Md.) and Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) played a major part in UMES' success. As a team, they defeated Penn State-Abington's Gabrielle Eberhardt and Janie Saile, 8-3. In singles play, King knocked off Eberhardt, (6-2, 6-1). Brown won, (7-5, 2-6, 7-5), by defeating Seena Philip.
DaTonya Price (Baltimore) also picked up a point for the Lady Hawks by taking down Honestee Sphabmixay (7-6, 3-6, 6-4).
On March 21, Maryland Eastern Shore goes to our Nation's Capital, Washington, D.C., to face Howard in their conference opener. First serve is 10 a.m. Later that day, the Lady Hawks travel to Emmitsburg, Md. where Mount St. Mary's awaits. Match begins at 3 p.m.
