QUEENS, N.Y.  -- After multiple heartbreakers this season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Tennis Team broke through as they snatched their first victory of the season, defeating the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 5-2. UMES also ended a 42-match losing streak, dating back to the 2012 season.

With the win, Maryland Eastern Shore improved to 1-11 overall while the Terriers dropped to 1-13 on the season.

Melequa King (Forestville, Md.) and Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) led the way for UMES. The duo picked up a point in doubles play, defeating St. Francis' No. 1 team of Dragana Dzigurski and Jovanna Bojinovic.

In singles competition, King won her second collegiate match by knocking off Jennifer Gonzalez in straight sets (6-3, 6-0). Jerabkova served as the squads No.2 and claimed her first win of the season, beating Dzigurski in consecutive sets (6-0, 6-2).

As the match progressed, UMES built confidence and momentum. South Carolina-native Alese Brown (Charleston) battled Bojinovic in the No. 3 spot. Brown held on and won the first set, 6-4, then completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory in the second set.

After taking the first set, 7-6, Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria) outlasted St. Francis' Rebecca Mares and won the second set, 6-1. DaTonya Price (Baltimore) competed in the toughest match of the day against De'Zhane Bennett. Price was flawless in the first set, 6-0, but Bennett rallied in the second and tied the match, 6-2. In the third and deciding set, Price kept her composure and prevailed to win the set and match, 6-1.

Tomorrow (04/09), the Lady Hawks look to keep the momentum going as they will take on the Wagner Seahawks in Staten Island, N.Y. First-serve is set for 10 a.m.
