SEAHAWKS TOP UMES IN NONCONFERENCE MATCHUP

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.  -- A day after pickup their first victory of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Tennis Team stayed in New York and took on the Wagner Seahawks in a nonconference matchup. The ladies were unable to duplicate yesterday's results as they were defeated, 4-0.

With the loss, UMES dropped to 1-12 overall while the Seahawks moved to 7-6 on the season.

In doubles play, Wagner won all three matches. Melequa King (Forestville, Md.) and Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) served as the team's No. 1 and scored a point before falling to the Seahawks' Marina Rull Valvieso and Madison Pautsch, 8-1. Maryland Eastern Shore's No. 2 team, Aleksandra Manolova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Reine Fowajuh (Wilmington, Del.), also tallied a point; however, lost by the same score, 8-1.

In singles, all three Lady Hawks fell in straight sets. King battled, but lost to Samantha Hodges (6-2, 6-0). Jerabkova recorded three points before falling to Pautsch (6-3, 6-0). After getting shutout in the first set, 6-0, Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) fought back in the second set. Despite the effort, Wagner's Rachel Jurgielewicz was too much as she defeated Brown, 6-2, in the second set to win the match.

Tomorrow (04/10), UMES wraps up the regular season on the road against Bowie State. First-serve is scheduled for 12:30 p.m.
