PRINCESS ANNE, Md. - In their first matches of the 2016 campaign, Coach Walter Woods and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Women's Tennis Team dropped both contests to route 13 rival Delaware State at Hawks Tennis Complex.
DSU (7-3, 3-3 MEAC) blanked the Lady Hawks both matches, 7-0. The first match counted towards conference play while the second was considered nonconference.
Senior Melequa King (Forestville, Md.) served as the squad's No. 1 for both contests. She faced DSU's Shelby Moffatt in the first match and lost in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). Then, King met Milan Graves and held an early 2-0 advantage before Graves took the next eight-of-out-nine games to win, 8-3.
Sophomore Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) took on Graves in the first match, serving as the team's No. 2 player. The South Carolina native grabbed a game; however, Graves would sweep Brown (6-1, 6-0).
Brown and King squared off against Graves and Moffatt in a pair of No. 1 teams in the first match. Both Lady Hawks battled, but Delaware State's duo would be too much as they won, 6-2.
Sophomore DaTonya Price (Baltimore) scored a point in the second match versus DSU's Maria Rachi before falling, 8-1.
For UMES (0-2, 0-1 MEAC), they will play six matches in seven days, beginning Thursday (March 31). The action begins in West Long Branch, N.J. where the Monmouth Hawks await. Match time is 1:30 p.m.
