Hawks Open Season With Loss At Terriers

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- In their season opener, Coach Walter Woods and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women's Tennis team was unable to come away with a victory as they came up short against St. Francis-Brooklyn (SFU), 6-0, at the Matchpoint, Mills Basin.

The Shore dropped to 0-1 on the young season while the Terriers (1-8) earned their first victory of the year.

In singles play, senior Melequa King (Washington, D.C.) served as the squad's No. 1 and scored three points before falling to SFU's Laura Dimante (6-1, 6-2).

Junior DaTonya Price (Baltimore) battled before dropping both sets to Sara Bogdanovic (6-3, 6-1).

In her first collegiate match, sophomore Jayla Gilliam (Richmond, Va.) earned a point before falling to Kimera Tanko Esapo in straight sets (6-1, 6-0).

In doubles play, King and junior Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) took on SFU's No. 1 team of Bogdanovic and Dimante. The Shore recorded a point before dropping the match, 6-1.

Price and newcomer Michal Kittrell (La Plata, Md.) also scored in their respective match, but came up short against the Terriers' Runsi Patro and Andrea Rojo, 6-2.

Tomorrow (Feb. 26), Maryland Eastern Shore faces Delaware State twice in Dover, Del. The first match starts at 10 a.m. while the second match begins approximately 2 p.m.
