NORFOLK, Va. - Coach Walter Woods and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Women's Tennis team begins April with a pair of losses at the hands of Norfolk State (NSU).
Eastern Shore (0-10, 0-4 MEAC) dropped the first match, 6-0, while the Spartans (3-6, 1-1 MEAC) took the nightcap, 4-0.
In the first bout, senior Melequa King (Washington, D.C.) served as the Hawks' top singles player and scored a point against the Spartans' Dajana Cvjetkovic. NSU's No. 1 player rebounded and took the match in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).
Junior Alese Brown (Charleston, S.C.) also tallied a point, but fell in consecutive sets against NSU's Liza Gordeeva (6-1, 6-0).
In league play, the Spartans won both doubles matches by identical scores, 6-0.
For the first time this season, King represented The Shore as its No. 2 singles player and earned a point against Gordeeva.
Tomorrow (April 2), Maryland Eastern Shore heads to Towson for a nonconference matchup. First-serve is scheduled for 4 p.m.
