May 3, 2017 PRINCESS ANNE, MARYLAND - The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced their selections for the Outdoor Track All-Academic Team. 234 student-athletes from the MEAC's 13 institutions were honored, including 16 from Maryland Eastern Shore.
Sophomores, juniors and seniors who have earned a 3.0 cumulative grade point average earn a place on the team. Transfer students who have been in residence for at least one year at their current school are also eligible.
"I want to congratulate our track and field student-athletes, who maintained a 3.0 or better grade point average, during the 2016-17 academic year," said Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas. "In addition to acknowledging the accomplishments of these student-athletes, I would also like to thank the institutional and athletic academic support staffs, faculty, coaches and families for their support in the academic and athletic success of their student-athletes."
The Maryland Eastern Shore players who received recognition included seniors Naje Benton (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Mark Blackmon (Charlotte, North Carolina), Jennaya Hield (Freeport, Bahamas), Shellasia Leitch (Newark, New Jersey), Shauntel Lucius (Newark, New Jersey), Donisha Porter (Aberdeen, Maryland), Khalil Rmidi Kinini (Malaga, Spain), Taj Showalter (Anchorage, Alaska), Kevin Stanford (Salisbury, Maryland), and Nassor Whitehead (Sunrise, Florida); juniors Regyn Davis-Young (Lanham, Maryland), Tanise Edwards (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania), Stanley Meli (Eldoret, Kenya), and Dypna Umunakwe (Bronx, New York); and sophomores Lenneisha Gilbert (Miami, Florida) and Juwan Richardson (Baltimore, Maryland).
The Hawks will compete in the 2017 MEAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships this weekend, which begins Thursday in Greensboro, North Carolina.
