BERLIN, MARYLAND – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore women's golf team finished second and the men's team finished in third in the Maryland Eastern Shore Collegiate Golf Challenge on Tuesday and Wednesday (Oct. 15-16) at Ocean City Golf Club.
This was both teams third tournament of the 2019-20 season.
Freshman Thabang Moephuli (Johannesburg, South Africa) led the charge for the Hawks finishing tied for fourth shooting 82+74+70=226 (+10) over the two-day 54-hole event featuring 25 players from five different universities. His career best 70 is the second lowest round in school history. Senior captain Young Lee (Mount Airy, Maryland) finished just behind his teammate in a tie for sixth shooting 80+78+72=230 (+14). Junior Brant Gillespie (Belvedere, South Carolina) played solid over the two days also placing in a tie for sixth 76+77+77=230 (+14). Junior Austin Dillon (Bishopville, Maryland) finished in a tie for 13th scoring 78+79+84=241 (+25) at his hometown course. Sophomore Paul Kerner (Crofton, Maryland) placed in 16th 78+83+85=246 (+30). The team just missed placing in second by two shots to Hampton University.
On the women's side, junior captain Sumayah Arcusa (Bowie, Maryland) improved from her last tournament performance by two positions placing sixth - 83+87=170 (+26). The women's division was played on Tuesday due to bad weather expected on Wednesday. Junior Morgan Miner (Fort Washington, Maryland) finished in seventh 82+89=171 (+27). Sophomore Briahna Willis (Little Rock, Arkansas) placed in 12th 91+95=186 (+42).
"We didn't play anywhere to our potential." women's head coach Billy Dillon said. "But we placed in second, all we can do is train and practice harder to get ready to play well for the tough competition next week at Lehigh."
The men's team will head to Petersburg, Virginia for the VSU Fall Classic hosted by Virginia State University on Oct. 22-23. The women's team will tee it up next at Lehigh Invitational hosted by Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Oct. 21-22.
