PRINCESS ANNE, Maryland - The University of Maryland Eastern Shore track & field team brought home victories following Sunday's (Feb. 3) performance at the Vince Brown Invitational. The men's squad scored 144 points while the women finished the meet with 116 points.
Five performers and a relay team earned individual victories during the meet. Sophomore Janoi Brown (Randallstown, Maryland) and senior Luan Gabriel (Roseau, Dominica) swept the 200 meter dashes with times of 22.65 and 25.62 seconds, respectively.
Brown's classmate Chisom Onukwugha (New Carrollton, Maryland) won the preliminary and final 60 meter hurdle events. His final time registered at 8.39 seconds. Freshman Jelisa Lovett (Iselin, New Jersey) earned her first collegiate victory with a 1.52 meter high jump and senior Neus Quinonero (Valencia, Spain) won the women's mile with a time of 5:11.96.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Gabriel, Quinonero, freshman Arianna Krcik (Pasadena, Maryland) and sophomore Ayanna Lynn (Rockville, Maryland) finished with a time of 4:05.09 to secure the Hawks' final win of the day.
Several more student-athletes contributed to the score sheet with top five efforts. This included the men's 4x400 relay team of junior Jonathan Robertson (Washington, District of Columbia), Brown, freshman Omar Rogers (Brooklyn, New York) and senior Judah Corriette (Roseau, Dominica), who placed second with a time of 3:26.62.
Freshman Mercy Chemutai (Eldoret, Kenya) earned a third place spot in the 3K, freshman Naomi English (Kensington, Maryland) took third in the long jump, and sophomore Chauncy Chewning (Richmond, Virginia) also finished third in the 60 meter hurdles.
