Hawks rally comes up short in loss to Hoyas

Next up for The Shore is trip to Mount St. Mary's

SALISBURY, Maryland —A three-run rally in the eighth inning wasn't enough for the University of Maryland Eastern Shore baseball team as the Hawks dropped a midweek matchup against the visiting Georgetown University Hoyas 7-4 on Wednesday (Feb 26) at Perdue Stadium.

Georgetown struck first by scoring two runs in the first inning off of starter Keith Carpenter (Walled Lake, Michigan).

Carpenter locked down the Hoyas in the second and worked out of a two-on jam in the third, but was faced with a locked-in Georgetown squad which squeezed two more runs out of the righty thanks to small ball.

Freshman Noah Covington (Seaford, Delaware) took over in the fifth for his first action in a Hawk uniform and was given a trial by fire following two Shore errors to plate a run. Covington would go two innings with a strikeout and keeps a clean ERA after his first appearance as the run was unearned.

Being no-hit into the sixth, the Hawks looked for a spark from the bench in the bat of Ryan Howe (Lancaster, Pennsylvania) who instead used his patience for a walk giving the Shore its first baserunner of the day. Staying hot from the weekend and slotted at designated hitter spot, Andrew Revels (Annapolis, Maryland) knocked in a single to end the no-hitter shortly after.

Howe would score a few pitches into the next at bat from third following a Hoya wild pitch, putting the first run on the board for the Hawks.

After another run was scored by Georgetown in the sixth, the Hawks bats came alive in the eighth with a rally inning following a Hoya pitching change.

Marcus Brown (Silver Spring, Maryland) led the inning off with a stand-up double and was knocked in by Chris Martin's (Hagerstown, Maryland) first career RBI. Martin then stole his first base as a Hawk before Revels walked for a two-on, two-out situation for Dillon Oxyer (Pasadena, Maryland).

Oxyer would end up picking up his first two RBIs of the early season with a double, bringing the Hawks within two at 6-2.

Unfortunately for the Shore, the luck had run out as Georgetown plated an insurance run in the top of the ninth before a two-on, two-out fielder's choice ended the game.

The Shore is on the road this weekend, heading to Emmitsburg, Maryland for a three-game series against the Mt. Saint Mary's Mountaineers, starting with a doubleheader on Friday (Feb 28) with game one at noon.
