Hawks Drop Series Opener Against Le Moyne

SUMMARY

Costly mistakes by the Hawks in the fifth inning and a pair of home runs by the Dolphins power the Le Moyne Dolphins over the Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks, 7-2, at Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex.

THE SCORE

Le Moyne Dolphins - 7

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks - 2

(Le Moyne Leads Seres 1-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED

On a cool day in Salisbury Maryland, The Dolphins and Hawks were in a stalemate on the scoreboard through four innings. However, while UMES failed to get a hit, Le Moyne threatened to score in both the second and third inning, leaving three runners in scoring position throughout those frames.

Unfortunately for the Maroon and Grey, the dam broke in the fifth inning due to some mistakes in the field. First UMES yielded the first two runners of the inning on a walk and an error respectively. Then on a sacrifice bunt attempt by the Dolphins, the Hawks conceded two runs because of an errant throw to first base on what should have been a routine play. Le Moyne added runs on a stolen base at home and a bases loaded walk to take a commanding lead, 4-0.

In the sixth inning, the two teams traded solo home runs. Ansel Carson clobbered a baseball over the right field wall for his second homer of the season to put the Hawks on the board. Maryland Eastern Shore's only other run came in the ninth inning when Jason Brown blistered an RBI double to left field to drive in Jason Brown. Ultimately, the Dolphins closed the game in the ninth, defeating the Hawks, 7-2.

THE NUMBERS

The Hawks finished the game with two runs on four hits and two errors while the Dolphins finished with seven runs on 10 hits and one error.

Ansel Carson finished one-for-four at the plate with a home run. Carson now has hit two home runs this season. The shortstop has recorded hits in four of his last five games.

Despite being tagged with the loss, Jonah Stepner did not yield a single earned run in his 4.2 inning start. Stepner has now pitched 13.2 consecutive innings without yielding an earned run.

Justin Spencer recorded a season-high 3.1 innings pitched, yielding just one earned run.
