HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
In the top of the first inning, the Hawks scored the first two runs of the game on a bases-loaded walk by Joshua Caldwell and a bases-loaded hit by pitch by Henry Clausell. Leading 2-0, UMES added a third run on a sacrifice fly by Diego Aponte in the top of the third inning.
Coppin State usurped the game's momentum in the bottom of the third frame, posting four runs on an RBI double and a three-run homer to pull ahead, 4-3.Â
Fueled by three scoreless innings from bullpen pitchers Spencer and Morales, the Hawk offense did enough to get the victory. First, Julian Jimenez hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the tying run in the top of the sixth. After both teams were held scoreless for the seventh, eighth, and ninth frames, Caldwell followed up a double from Diego Aponte by lining a go-ahead RBI single up the middle to put UMES ahead. Leading 5-4, Clausell and Kedrick Alicea each scored on a fielding error to put the Maroon and Grey up by three.
Morales closed the game in the bottom of the 10th, retiring the side in order en route to the Hawks' second-straight NEC victory.
