Gonzalez Perez records five RBI, Hawks drop series finale to first-place FDU 13-9

SUMMARY

TEANECK, NJ - The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks fell 13-9 to the FDU Knights on Saturday afternoon at Naimoli Family Baseball Complex.

THE SCORE

Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks (5-23, 4-11) - 9

FDU Knights (19-9, 13-2) - 13

(FDU wins the series 3-0)

HOW IT HAPPENED 

In the top of the first inning, Jonathan Gonzalez Perez tagged a two-RBI single to center field before Amari Hackett laced an RBI single through the middle, giving UMES a 3-0 advantage.

After FDU answered with a run in the second, Gonzalez Perez responded with a two-run home run in the third inning, giving the Hawks their largest lead of the game, 5-1.

Although the Knights answered with a two-run homer in the third, leading 5-3, Gonzalez Perez again drove in another run on a sacrifice fly to expand UMES advantage. 

Fairleigh Dickinson then  tied up the game with a three-run homer in the fifth inning before UMES regained the lead when Ansel Carson scored on a balk in the sixth frame. The Knights followed up by taking their first lead of the game, 8-7, in the bottom of the sixth until Elijah Negron singled down the right field line in the seventh inning to drive in the tying run.

Unfortunately for the Hawks, FDU recorded a grand slam and a solo home run in the bottom of the eighth to pull ahead. Despite Bronson Taylor recording his first home run of the season in the ninth, the Knights held on to win 13-9. Sweeping the three-game series.

THE NUMBERS

The Hawks recorded nine runs on 11 hits and no errors while the Knights tallied 13 runs on 12 hits and three errors

Negron went 3-for-5 with an RBI, setting a new career high in hits.

Taylor finished 2-for-4 and hit his first home run of the season

Gonzalez Perez went 2-for-2 with a career-high five RBI. He also tallied his team-high seventh home run of the season.
