WEST HAVEN, Conn.– The Maryland Eastern Shore Hawks split their doubleheader with the New Haven Chargers on Friday Afternoon at Vieira Field.
GAME 1
SUMMARY
Big performances from Esteban Torres, Jonathan Gonzalez Perez, Darrius Brown, and Diego Aponte lead UMES to 5-1 victory over New Haven.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Outside of a New Haven run in the third inning, starting pitcher Esteban Torres held the Chargers scoreless through six innings of work.
The Hawk offense capitalized on the strong starting pitching. In the fourth inning, Diego Aponte hit a two-run homer to right field to give UMES a 2-1 advantage.
Jonathan Gonzalez Perez added insurance runs by scoring on a passed ball in the sixth before driving in two runs on an RBI double in the seventh, cementing UMES 5-1 lead.
Henry Clausell locked down the save with three scoreless innings out of the bullpen, clinching a series opening win for UMES.

The Hawks finished with five runs on 10 hits and two errors
Darrius Brown paced the Hawks in hits, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate.
Ansel Carson went 2-for-4 to tally a multi hit game

SUMMARY
A go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning helped the Chargers edge out the Hawks in game two, 5-4, to even the series.

HOW IT HAPPENED
New Haven stacked one run in the first and two runs in the third to build a 3-0 advantage.
In the top of the sixth, Maryland Eastern Shore countered with an RBI double from Clausell and a bases-clearing three-run double from Aponte to pull ahead.
Trailing 4-3, the Chargers recorded a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth to take the lead for good. New Haven's closing pitcher recorded the final ten outs en route to a 5-4 win for the Chargers.
THE NUMBERS
The Hawks tallied four runs on seven hits and an error while the Chargers amassed five runs on nine hits and an error
Amari Hackett pitched three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Hackett leads UMES relievers (minimum five appearances) with a team-best 2.87 ERA
Carter Champey matched his best relief outing of the season, recording two scoreless innings out of the bullpen
Aponte, Clausell, and Joshua Caldwell all recorded two-hit games
