UMES TRACK & FIELD STARTING OFF ON THE RIGHT FOOT

PRINCESS ANNE, MD-- The University of Maryland Eastern Shore's (UMES) men's and women's outdoor track and field program is starting to take off, for the finish line. In their first meet of the season, the Charlotte 49er Classic, they have had some very impressive performances.

The women in the 49er Classic had especially good performances with Alyssa Walker nabbing sixth place in the 400 meter dash in a field of over 40 contestants. In the 800 meter run Tasha Century took 11th and was followed by Evelynn Mendoza in 16th place. That event had more than 70 entries. Walker had another solid showing in the 400-meter hurdles taking sixth place with a time of 1:03.67. As a team the women ran the 4 x 400 meter relay and finished second to Pittsburgh with a time of 3:54.34. In field events Kelly Ann Lue nabbed fourth place in the long jump.

The men had three of the top six places in the 800 meter run with Damion Drummond taking third, Barnabas Togom fourth and Marlon Tomlinson taking sixth. Togom had another strong showing in the 5000 meter run crossing in sixth place with a time just over 15 minutes. Jeffery Andrews-Barrett took seventh in the 400-meter hurdles in a field of almost 50 athletes. UMES also put two top 20 finishers in the 3000-meter steeplechase when Raffaele Simpson took 13th and Frederick Keter finishing 20th. Similar to the women the men had a strong performance in the 4 x 400 meter relay taking fourth and ninth places with their 'A' and 'B' teams respectively. In field events Joe Hylton took sixth place in the high jump while Clifton Harcum was eighth in the shot put. In the javelin throw Andrews-Barrett took a top ten placing with a ninth place finish.
