QUIETER FRIDAY LEADS TO SATURDAY OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRACK

GREENSBORO, N.C.  -- The men's and women's track & field teams from UMES may not have racked up as many points In day two of the MEAC Championships, but they earned several crucial qualifications in advance of the final day, setting the stage for a solid run at the conference  title.

UMES captured twelve points on the men's side, dropping from first to third. Meanwhile, one Lady Hawks competitor scored to bring their team's total of 12 points, leaving them in seventh place.

Once again, senior Dillon Simon (Roseau, Dominica) led the charge for the men's team with his performance in the shot put. His distance of 17.60 meters won the event and scored 10 points for his squad. Fellow senior Rico Duncan (Cheverly, Md.) finished seventh with a toss of 14.21 meters to tally two more points. Overall, their scores brought the team's total to 46.5 points.

Freshman Tanise Edwards (Philadelphia, Pa.) earned one point in the heptathlon with a total of 3,643, finishing in eighth. She posted a fourth place finish in the long jump and a pair of ninth place finishes in the javelin throw and the 800 meter run.

Many more Hawks earned the chance to compete tomorrow by qualifying for the event finals. Sophomore Shelasia Leitch (Newark, N.J.) qualified with the second place seed in the 100 meter hurdles, and another sophomore, Taj Showalter (Anchorage, Ak.), took sixth place and qualified for the men's 110 meter hurdles.

Four Lady Hawks all qualified for the women's 800 meter run, finishing one after the other between second and fifth. Senior Shantol Hemley (St. Catherine's, Jamaica) came in second, sophomore Rachel Halmon (Waldorf, Md.) took third, junior Jheniel Kelly captured fourth, and senior Margret Wilmot-Francis (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) finished fifth. Sophomore Sodiq Amusat (Lanham, Md.) took the fourth spot in the men's qualifier and will also compete on Saturday.

After day two, Bethune-Cookman leads the ladies' meet with a total of 38.33 points and North Carolina A&T leads the men's meet with 52 points. The Wildcats of B-CU also sit between the first place Aggies and third place Hawks with 47 points on the men's side.

The final day of the 2015 championships will commence tomorrow morning in Greensboro.
