PRINCESS ANNE, Md.- The first road test for the upstart Hawks squad proved challenging Friday night in Wilmington, North Carolina. A Stetson Hatter squad searching for its fourth win managed to stop UMES from claiming their 11th, as the Hatters claimed a 3-0 win at UNCW's Hanover Hall.
For the Hawks, the defeat marks the end of their perfect run to begin the season, although they still set a school record for the best start in school history with ten straight wins.
Freshman Lucia Babic (Sisak, Croatia) kept up her torrid pace with eight kills and a .412 kill percentage. Sophomore Alana Polk (Houston, Texas) and junior Haley Robinson (Honolulu, Hawaii) helped out on two blocks, and seniors Andjela Reljic (Novi Sad, Serbia) and Petra Jerabkova (Prague, Czech Republic) tallied 11 digs each. Five different Hawks registered aces in the match.
UMES was closest to the Hatters in the first set. Behind the serves of freshman Zuzana Ondruskova (Bilovec, Czech Republic) and Reljc, the Hawks jumped out to an early lead. But the Hatters hung tough, tying the set at the 20th point. The game would stay tight as UMES would fall behind, then surge ahead thanks to a Babic kill and a Robinson ace. Although the set would be tied at 23 when Stetson made a couple of attack errors, the Hatters would win the next two points and the set.
Despite furious efforts and rallies, particularly in set number three, the Hawks would not lead in either of the next two sets. Stetson won set two by a 25-15 score and set three by a 25-18 score. The Hatters were led by Haley Tippett with 11 kills and Alexa Drost with 14 digs.
The Hawks will look to return to their winning ways with a doubleheader on Saturday, as they face a 12:30p.m. match with the hosting Seahawks and a 5:00p.m. bout with the Presbyterian Blue Hose.
