DOVER, Delaware – The Maryland Eastern Shore track and field program saw immense success on their trip to Delaware State University to participate in the DSU Sting Invite on Wednesday (April 7). Over twenty individuals placed in their respective events, including
Nasir Neal-Watson and
Indya Hansley winning multiple throws, at the four-team meet.
"I was pumped with the energy level our men and women displayed in their events," head coach
Damion Drummond said. "When we compete in small meets as this it's great to take advantage of contesting events outside the normal scope to get a better indication of areas on the team that we can maximize come MEAC championships."
Hansley walked away with the most glory after the Sting, the junior took second in three events – shot put, discus and javelin – and third in the hammer throw. Her javelin throw of 23.61m set a personal record.
Neal-Watson took first in the javelin with a 38.72 mark, as well as second in the discus and third in the shot.
Having a solid day jumping,
Mackel Pierrilus placed in three events, the high jump, pole vault and the triple jump. Pierrilus set a personal record with his 3.05m vault.
For the women's jumps it was the Hawk show, with Jelissa Lovett taking third in the high,
Naomi English taking second in the long jump with
Jadaya Strand behind her at third and once again Attinuke Shittu stole the show with an 11.43m triple.
The Goslee brothers continue to improve on their quest to become top multies athletes, both set a personal records in multiple events.
Caleb Goslee set his highs in the 110 hurdles, discus throw, the javelin and took third in the pole vault with his 2.90m PR. Josh Goslee set his records in the 800m, 110 hurdles and javelin throw while taking third in both the javelin and long jump.
In the 400m hurdles the Hawks finished 1-2 in both the men's and women's races.
Zachary Opon took first in the men's with
Darin Ragin finishing just behind,
Spencer Settle and
Mackenzi Evans did the same in the women's – both setting PRs.
The 100m was another successful race for the Shore,
Mahki Herring taking first with a 10.96 personal record on the men's side and
Malea Sharps finishing second for the women.
The longest race for the Hawks was the 1500m, with
Asshanni Robb taking first for the women while setting a PR of 4:59.84 and
Edwin Kipruto taking first for the men with a 4:29.34 race.
Coach Drummond's favorite race, the 4x400m, went great for the women's team of Robb, Settle, Evans and English with a 4:04.12 to place first and the men's squad of
Adrian Dula,
Janoi Brown,
Jaylin Nelson and Herring taking second with a 3.23.05.
Other top performers included
James Perkins taking third in the discus,
Ryan Gui Dibo third in the hammer with his PR of 35.50m,
Malik Melhado with a third place PR in the 800m going 2:07.19,
Sanaa Shakwi third in her discus event and
Mya Johnson throwing 23.51m in the javelin.
It's a weekend off for the Shore as the Hawks take some time to recover and train before another Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference meet, heading to the Kenneth Giles Invitational at Norfolk State starting on April 15. The invitational is in its second year and it will be the first time the Hawks have participated in the event.
