Washington D.C. - The George Washington (20-8) volleyball team defeated Maryland Eastern Shore, 3-0 (30-23, 30-22, 30-26) Tuesday in a nonconference match at GW?s Smith Center. Sophomore Jana Milin paced the Hawks in the losing effort totaling 19 kills, 13 digs, three service aces, and one block. She accounted for 23 points on her own. Mamie Lewis also played well racking up eight kills. Aja Smith added 13 digs. Head Coach Toby Rens is a former GW assistant volleyball coach while former collegiate standout Renee Arnold also played there. Rens served as GW?s assistant coach for four seasons from 1994 through 1997.

UMES (24-10) hung with the Colonials despite falling 3-0. They put up a tough fight from the start and clamped down in the third game. The Hawks raced out to a 9-4 lead before GW closed to within one at 10-9 on a kill by setter Lauren Dunning. UMES responded with an 8-3 run for an 18-12 advantage but again GW scored eight of the next 10 points to tie the game at 20-20. It ended 30-26 in favor of the Colonials.

GW senior hitter Ruth Lazzari scored 13 points on 12 kills and a service ace to lead the Colonials. Freshman Juliene McLaughlin tallied 12 points on 11 kills and an ace and added a team-high 13 digs in the victory. GW sophomore Abigail Hatter hit .462 with seven kills in 13 swings while committing just one hitting error and assisted on a pair of blocks.

The Hawks hope to regroup when they play their final regular season match on Saturday, November 15 at 2:00 pm against American University in Washington D.C. Then it will be off ot Greensboro, NC where the Hawks will make a run at the MEAC Championship.
