UMES TAKES NINE GOLD MEDALS AT TOWSON INVITE

TOWSON, Md. - In their second meet of the season, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore men's and women's outdoor track and field team captured nine gold medals at the Towson Invite Saturday.

The Hawks started the afternoon by grabbing first place in the men's shot put as sophomore Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) threw a distance of 16.13m (52' 11"). Brown also took fifth in the discus with a throw of 37.91m (124' 4").

In the women's shot put, junior Vanessa Henry (Capitol Heights, Md.) finished first with a distance of 14.17m (46' 6") while freshman Lexia Robinson (White Plains, N.Y.) placed second with a throw of 12.66m (41' 6.50").

Freshman Denvil Ruan (Anguilla B.W.I.) took home the gold medal in the men's triple jump with a distance of 13.84m (45' 5"). In the women's triple jump, freshman Geranda Williams (Waldorf, Md.) placed third with a distance of 10.40m (34' 1.50").

Sophomore Rico Taylor (Silver Spring, Md.) recorded a height of 1.88m (6' 2") in the high jump, good for second place.

Wrapping up the field events was freshman Dwayne Powell (Mitchellville, Md.) in the long jump with his third place distance of 6.23m (20' 5.25").

Juniors Ackeem Smith (St. Catherine, Jamaica) and Jermol Dix (Catonsville, Md.) finished first and second, respectively, in the 110m hurdles. Smith finished in a time of 14.78 while Dix recorded a time of 14.84.

In the 400m hurdles, sophomore Andre Walsh (St. Catherine, Jamaica) placed second with a time of 52.80.

UMES also finished first in the men's and women's 400m dash. Senior Thomas Keane-Dawes (Camden, N.C.) finished in a time of 49.61 while junior Cynthia Anais (Martinique, France) ran a 57.84.

The Hawks took three of the top four positions in the men's 3000m steeplechase. Freshman Mustapha Habbani (Saint-Gervais-la-Foret France) finished first with a time of 9:50.16 while sophomore Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) was second in 9:51.10. Junior Shadrack Maritim (Kericho, Kenya) placed fourth with a time of 10:47.27.

The men's 4x100 relay finished first on the day with a time of 42.77 and included senior Damian Miles (Teaneck, N.J.), Keane-Dawes, sophomore Nyls Nubret (St. Francois, Guadeloupe) and Smith.

The women's 4x100 relay finished third in their race with a time of 50.08 and included junior Monique Hawkins (Randallstown, Md.) and sophomores Jennell Wade (White Plains, Md.), Jasmine Benbow (White Plains, Md.) and Melina Gallas (Paris, France).

UMES will split squads next weekend between the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Fla. and the Penn Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa.
