COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Vanessa Henry (Capital Heights, Md.) and the Hawks earned six top two finishes in the Maryland Invitational on Saturday.
UMES sent their throwers, women's distance runners and pole vaulters to College Park, competing in seven total events in the meet.
Henry had a very strong day overall, qualifying for the ECAC Championship in the women's shot put with a throw of 14.70 meters, getting first place in the event. She also set a new school record in the discus throw with a distance of 42.78 meters on the third toss, getting 2nd place and surpassing the previous UMES mark of 41.68 meters set by Saisha Woodward.
Lexia Robinson (White Plains, N.Y.) also competed in the shot put and discus throw, earning strong finishes in each. She placed 4th in the shot put with a distance of 13.19 meters and 8th in the discus throw with a toss of 33.70 meters. Imani Cox (Plainfield, N.J.) finished 9th in the shot put with a throw of 11.04 meters.
The women's side finished up with the pole vault, as Chelsea Lowe (Kennett Square, Pa.) tied the school record set by herself in the Wake Forest Open with a height of 3.20 meters, earning 2nd place.
In the men's 1500-meter run, Mustapha Habbani (Saint-Gervais-la-ForÃÆ'Æ'Æ'ÃÆ'ââ'¬Â 'ªt France) got 1st with a time of 3:55.34, his second straight meet with a first place finish. Shadrack Maritim (Kericho, Kenya) and Basil Melek (Grand Prairie, Texas) also competed in the event, getting 21st and 24th respectively with times of 4:12.56 and 4:14.36.
Maritim also finished well in the 800-meter run, getting 22nd place with a time of 2:03.28.
In the men's throwing events, Marcus Brown (Gaithersburg, Md.) picked up a pair of second place finishes in the shot put with a throw of 15.56 meters and the discus throw with a toss of 46.88 meters.
Despite competing in just seven total events, the UMES women finished in 6th place as a team with 32 points while the men got 8th place with 26 points.
The Hawks are next set to compete in the Morgan State Legacy Meet on April 23rd in Baltimore.
