Granville Cannon played on the UMES Basketball team, helping to lead the Hawks to one of their best seasons in history.

As a freshman, Cannon burst onto the scene with a strong year for the Hawks in the 1972-1973 season. The 5'10 guard averaged 11.8 points per game on 54% shooting across 19 games. Cannon was also consistent from the charity stripe with a 79.2% free throw shooting percentage.

After a solid freshman year, Cannon continued his contributions to the team in the historic 1973-1974 season. The sophomore guard averaged just under 6 points a game across 28 games played. Cannon also added 2.6 rebounds per game and made 70% of his free throws.

Under Coach John Bates, the Hawks capped off one of the most dominant seasons in UMES Men's Basketball history with a 27-2 (11-1 MEAC) record, winning both a MEAC Regular Season Championship and a MEAC Tournament Title. The Maroon and Gray won 20 games in a row to begin the regular season and finished first in the NCAA in scoring with 97.6 points per contest.

The Hawks earned a spot in the 1974 NIT Tournament. UMES went on to defeat Manhattan in the first round 84-81 at Madison Square Garden before falling to Jacksonville in the second round of the NIT.
