A 1975 Business Administration graduate of UMES, Casey first earned accolades helping his men's basketball team to a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) regular-season and tournament championship in 1974. The team went on to earn a spot in the prestigious NIT and became the first Historically Black College or University (HBCU) to earn a berth to the event. Soon after, UMES won their first round game over Manhattan, 84-81, becoming the first HBCU to win an NIT game. The team finished the season with a 27-2 record, was ranked during the season as high as No. 20 in the National Associated Press (AP) poll and finished the regular season with one loss, enough at the time to deny the Hawks a bid to the NCAA Tournament, which took just 25 teams at the time.

Casey played in 25 of the Hawks 29 games that year and was the team's sixth leading scorer. Casey went on to compete professionally, playing pro basketball in Venezuela in the South American League in 1975.

Since then, Casey has made a huge impact in the community. A program celebrating Casey's achievements stated the following "his accomplishments and accolades are many as he extends himself in both his commitment to his career, his community and to his alma mater. He has been a passionate educator and administrator for more than twenty-six years. He has held positions of increased responsibility, including Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, Principal and program director, to name but a few. He has always given his time and talent, and has shown leadership and inspired many in his profession. His impassioned signature "Hawk for Life", 10 years ago has transitioned to multiple mediums."

The Alexandria, Va. native graduated from T.C. Williams High School (famous for the Remember the Titans film), where he played basketball as a member of the Northern Virginia AAA Regional and District Championship Teams. Casey is giving back to his home as he currently serves as Director of the Alexandria City Public School Sheltercare Home School Educational Program, an alternative school for at-risk students.

After earning his degree from UMES, Casey went on to earn numerous other degrees and certifications. He received his Ph.D. in Education Administration and Supervision in 2007 from Nova Southeastern University in Florida. His research specialized in designing and building programs to improve the behavior and grades of at-risk students. He earned his Education Administration and Supervision license from the University of Virginia and holds a Master of Science degree in Special Education from George Mason University.

Casey won an Economic Opportunities Commission (EOC) award for five years of exemplary service to the City of Alexandria as a Commissioner, a position in which he worked to help needy Alexandrians obtain affordable housing, among other civic objectives. He is an Urban League Life Member, an NAACP Life Member, a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. for Life, the Chaplain of the Masonic Victory Lodge #23, is a Certified Technology Specialist in the Alexandria City Public Schools, is a board member of the Concerned Citizen Network of Alexandria, the Hopkins House Community and the Alexandria Departmental Progressive Club, among other organizational memberships he holds.

He even served as a basketball coach in Alexandria at his alma mater, T.C. Williams High School.

Casey is a life member of the UMES National Alumni Association, and is member of the DC Metro Alumni Association. He is affectionately and ironically known as "Doc Casey" from his college days. Casey is an ardent supporter of Hawk Athletics, both attending homecoming almost every year since graduation and supporting multiple events at his alma mater through his time, talent, and treasure.
